Aparthotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
Porto Raphael Residences & Suites, proudly bearing the Green Key certification, exhibits a profound commitment to eco-friendly practices, harmoniously marrying the delights of a luxury stay with responsible environmental practices. Drawing power from the sun, this stunning property utilizes solar energy to meet its electricity needs. The architecture pays homage to sustainable design principles; built from materials sourced responsibly, it is designed to optimize natural airflow and light, reducing reliance on artificial air-conditioning, heating, and lighting. Additionally, the resort partakes in a range of eco-friendly initiatives such as reforestation and wildlife conservation, manifesting its commitment to the environment in tangible actions.

The property's dedication to sustainability doesn't end there. The property efficiently collects and uses rainwater, maintaining cleanliness with the aid of eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning agents. Additionally, the in-house restaurant prioritizes organic offerings and includes a vegetarian menu, underscoring the use of locally harvested ingredients. This approach not only aids the local economy but also aids in reducing the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. The use of LED lighting, waste separation into various categories, the composting of organic waste, and the initiation of a zero-waste policy exemplify Porto Raphael's environmental responsibility. Notably, the establishment of an automatic system that turns off lights and appliances when guests leave their rooms, and a similar system for air-conditioning and heating when windows are open, indicates a strong focus on energy conservation. Furthermore, by appointing an environmental manager and training staff on environmental policies, Porto Raphael ensures these eco-friendly measures are diligently upheld.

Hotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
Sustainability is an integral facet of room2 Chiswick Hometel, forming the foundation for their commitment to combatting climate change and enhancing the environment. Esteemed as the world's first fully net zero ho(me)tel, the establishment has set an industry standard by being 100% net zero carbon from its construction, operation to deconstruction. The premise extends to building and operating entire life net zero hometels, where all the carbon emissions related to the building's life cycle amount to zero. Any unavoidable emissions are offset through a partnership with a nature-based reforesting partner in Nicaragua.

Apart from its remarkable carbon neutrality efforts, room2 Chiswick Hometel has various sustainability initiatives in place. Ultra low flow showers conserve water, while heat pumps extract heat energy from the earth for heating and water systems. The building runs purely on electricity derived from renewable sources, with onsite solar panels and ground source heat pumps providing a part of the energy. The roof is home to solar panels, a 'green roof' promoting biodiversity and insulation, and a 'blue roof' which collects rainwater to mitigate local flooding. Additionally, the establishment ensures zero waste, recycles all waste, promotes local sourcing, houses bee hives for local honey, and employs smart technology for energy efficiency. It has been awarded a Gold rating by Green Tourism, recognizing its exceptional environmentally-friendly practice.

room2 Chiswick is the world’s first whole life net zero hotel, which means that all the carbon emissions from raw materials, in-use, refurbishments through to end-of-life have been accounted for. Reduction measures have been put in place and any unavoidable emissions are offset through verified carbon capture projects.

On-site solar panels generate renewable energy to meet about 5% of the buildings energy demand, and the rest of the energy is from a 100% renewable energy tariff. 17 Ground source heat pump boreholes go 200m into the ground, and convert 100% of the energy needed for the heating, cooling and hot water. In warmer weather the ground acts as a heat sink by taking the heat from the building, reversing in colder weather. It’s 36% more efficient than traditional energy generation systems.
We’re piloting a low heat hot water system to heat the water to 45 degrees rather than traditional systems heating to 70 degrees, thus expected to reduce energy use by 9%. The lighting and heating systems are occupancy enabled and detect door and human movement in every bedroom, avoiding any energy waste when the room is not in use.
The building has its own R and D lab, with 2 guest rooms tracking granular data on energy and water consumption, for every switch, socket, appliance, light, fan coil, in addition to water meters and air quality, so we can learn about our guest behaviour, and trial interventions to lower consumption, applying learnings to future hotels.
On the roof, alongside 75,000 bee hives, is a green roof, and blue roof that can hold 50,000l of rain water and slow into local drainage systems.

Sustainability has been incorporated into all decision making. A key win has been supporting local business, with 100% of the bespoke loose furniture at room2 Chiswick made within 10 miles from site. We worked with a range of local artists to make bespoke items.

The hotel is completely designed in accordance with the principles of the CIRCULAR ECONOMY:
- all furniture and lighting equipment were saved from the container and upcycled (except for the beds ;-)),
- all doors are reused (from a castle, monastry, brewery, ...)
- all table ware and decoration is second hand

We try to use a maximum of SHORT CHAIN products (local production of beer, cheese, ham, tea burned in Bruges, ...)
The breakfast contains a lot of HOME MADE products (granola, jams, pan cakes, fruit salad, fruit juice, ...).
Our guests get a breakfast list so they can indicate what they like or not, so we AVOID to throw food away.

The planting has been chosen to support maximum BIODIVERSITY (to attract and feed bees, butterflies, birds, ...)

Smoking is prohibited in the whole facility (including the terraces)

We promote the use of PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Guests who uses only public transport (train/bus) get a home made present from us.

Hotel Taking Steps Towards Sustainability
The Almfamilyhotel Scherer presents an example of eco-friendly hospitality at its best, cleverly weaving sustainable practices into every facet of its operation. The hotel leverages renewable energy, harnessing solar radiation and geothermal energy to provide for its energy needs. The structure of the hotel has been thoughtfully designed to maximize natural light and air flow, reducing reliance on artificial heating, lighting, and air conditioning. Triple-glazed windows contribute to the energy efficiency, effectively blocking heat and cold. A commitment to sustainability is exhibited in their choice of building materials, all derived from sustainable resources, as well as a green roof that contributes to insulation and rainwater absorption.

The hotel’s dedication to environmental preservation extends to water management, waste management, and energy conservation. Rainwater is collected and used throughout the property, while the wastewater is responsibly treated and reused. The toilets are designed to flush using only up to six litres per flush. Waste separation is diligently performed into at least three categories, and all organic waste is composted. The property has installed LED lighting and employs an automatic system that turns off lights and electrical appliances when guests leave their rooms. Guests are encouraged to participate in energy conservation through signs informing them that towels will only be changed upon request. Furthermore, the on-site restaurant provides an exceptional dining experience with organic food sourced primarily from local producers, also offering a vegetarian menu. To ensure continual improvement, the hotel performs an energy audit every five years, reaffirming its commitment to eco-friendly operations.

Bariseele obtained the green key as first B and B in historical center of Bruges. Our guests enjoy the delicious local products, such organic jams and rolls from the traditional bakery.

Eco B and B Bariseele offers luxury with their eco 550 gram/m² towels, Egyptian cotton sheets and eco Pascal Morabito amenities. We do encourage our guests to reduce waste, energy and water, and this without losing comfort. Water you can drink from the tap, you enjoy a Rain shower in all comfort with air bubbles, and if we may ask to turn off lights when leaving the room.

As an engineer, I have tried to innovate my home... having 90% of our lights replaced by energy-saving lamps, installing a green roof for better insulation, replacing all electric gear with A+++ labels, insulating the roof top and all windows equipped with extra insulating glass panes. A step to a greener and cost reducing B and B.
