Location
The Big Island Hostel is located in a prime location in the heart of Hilo, making it incredibly convenient for guests to get anywhere they need to go. The hostel is close to beautiful lakes, parks, restaurants and even the local airport. Guests love the location and describe it as perfect, great, super and convenient. They also appreciate how everything they need, including bus lines, is within walking distance. The hostel is situated right in the city with only short walks needed to find a grocery store, park, beach or bustling inner city. Some guests note the hostel is located in a bit of a rundown area of town, but others mention how super the location is, especially due to the excellent restaurant/pub that's right next door. Despite this, many guests still feel that the location is one of the best places to stay on the island, ideal for those wanting to explore Hilo, visit the beach, parks or do some shopping. Additionally, the hostel provides a small common room and parking spaces for guests and for those who prefer a more peaceful location, the hostel is in a quiet neighborhood not too far from the airport.

Rooms
The Big Island Hostel offers lovely, spacious rooms with comfortable and clean wooden bunk beds perfect for a good night's sleep. Some private rooms come with a balcony, offering a pleasant view of the surrounding area. The rooms are organized and very clean, including the kitchen and bathroom areas. Guests appreciated the lockboxes to store their belongings and separate door codes for added security. The couple's room in the dorms was a great option and guests loved the affordable private rooms. Additionally, the location is superb with a great restaurant/pub right beside the hostel. While there were some complaints about soundproofing, the overall vibe of the hostel is relaxed and pleasant with well-decorated and thoughtfully designed rooms.

Beds
The Big Island Hostel offers spacious rooms with nice wooden bunk beds that are very comfortable. However, it seems to be not common in the US in general to have curtains, private shelves, lights and plugs next to your bed. Nevertheless, the beds at this hostel are super comfortable and free towels are provided. Guests can also enjoy big rooms with good air conditioning and comfy beds. Despite some instances of lower bunk requests not being fulfilled, the bed and pillow are soft and comfortable. Overall, the hostel provides generous spaces with comfortable and solid beds.

Cleanliness
The Big Island Hostel provides immaculate accommodation with an excellent level of cleanliness. The charming decor and hospitable staff make you feel like you're staying in a hotel rather than a hostel. The common kitchen is efficiently managed with labeling for personal storage, while the bathrooms are spotless. The hostel has a great vibe and is well-organized with rooms being exceptionally clean and comfortable. The cleanliness of the property is praised by most guests with many describing it as one of the cleanest hostels they’ve ever stayed in. However, there are some negative reviews where guests found the private kitchen area lacking in cleanliness and cockroaches were spotted in some of the rooms. Nonetheless, the general consensus is that this is a clean, cozy and inviting hostel to spend your time on the Big Island.

Staff
The Big Island Hostel boasts an incredibly helpful and friendly staff with numerous guests raving about their welcoming demeanor. The staff, such as Travis and Lotus, are particularly accommodating and responsive to guests' needs and requests. Many guests also noted that the staff is always available and on-site 24/7. Dutch, the manager, especially stands out for his kindness and the way he makes guests feel important. Several guests appreciated the multicultural dynamics of the staff with Dutch being a plus for some. Despite a slight issue with the front door not opening automatically, the staff made sure to accommodate guests' late arrivals and check-ins. Additionally, Gabriel, the managing director, sets an exceptional standard for customer service with his courteous, kind, helpful and understanding approach. Overall, guests agree that the staff's friendliness and professionalism, combined with the hostel's location, cleanliness and well-equipped kitchen, make for an excellent and welcoming experience.
