Originally built in the late 17th century, the monastery came to life through the ambition of Sister Rosa Pandolfi, a descendant of the noble family Pontone di Scala who had taken up residence in Conca dei Marini. Finally it was purchased by a Roman hotelier Mr. Marcucci, who recognised the property’s historic value and the old convent was transformed into a hotel in 1924. Esteemed for its authentic simplicity typical of monastic life, the Hotel Santa Rosa became one of the 39 castle hotels of Italy. The hotel’s motto was “At each window, the sun."

Summary of reviews
Hotel San Rocco consistently receives accolades for its exceptional location on the shores of Lake Orta, providing stunning views of the lake and Isola San Giulio. Its proximity to Orta’s charming town center further enhances its appeal, offering guests the tranquility of a lakeside retreat with easy access to local attractions. Facilities like the pool, terrace and breakfast room are designed to maximize enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings.

Breakfast at the hotel, while generally praised for its variety and quality, has room for improvement, particularly in offering outdoor dining options and addressing occasional organizational issues. Nonetheless, many guests appreciate the hearty and generous breakfast offerings, enhanced by the scenic views.

The dining experience at Hotel San Rocco is highly esteemed with the lakeside terrace providing a magnificent backdrop. Guests commend the exceptional quality and taste of the cuisine, although some note the high prices and limited vegetarian options. Service quality varies with some guests encountering unprofessionalism.

Rooms at the hotel present a mixed experience. Many guests enjoy spacious, clean and well-maintained rooms with modern renovations and picturesque views. However, some rooms are reported as outdated with issues like poor lighting, small sizes and insufficient sound insulation. Cleanliness also varies with some guests encountering unhygienic conditions and maintenance issues in bathrooms.

Staff interactions are generally positive with many guests finding the staff friendly, helpful and professional. However, inconsistencies in service quality and occasional communication issues are noted.

The free Wi-Fi service is frequently described as weak and unstable, which can be inconvenient for guests needing a reliable connection. The pool area, while beautiful and relaxing, has occasional maintenance and temperature issues.

Parking is convenient with available private facilities and an underground garage, though securing a spot can be challenging. Beds receive mixed reviews with many finding them comfortable but some reporting issues with mattress quality.

Despite its potential, Hotel San Rocco appears to struggle in meeting four-star expectations with frequent mentions of outdated facilities, cleanliness issues and inconsistent service. While the superb location and beautiful surroundings are significant positives, enhancements in room standards, overall maintenance and service quality are needed to align more closely with its four-star rating.

Monastery
In one of Italy’s most fashionable shopping districts, find a 15th-century convent transformed into an urban sanctuary of luxury and comfort. A dramatically reborn convent with a mere 118 rooms and suites, this hotel is steps from Milan's couture houses and financial district on the exclusive Via Gesù between Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. Historians soon unravelled the story of an old convent that had been converted to a private residence in the late 1700s, when many of the features of the ancient church and cloister were hidden. Before long, frescos and stuccos emerged – many dating to Medieval times – and today they are part of the distinct décor that characterises the Hotel, including the spectacular soaring ceilings of its most favoured guest rooms.
