Haunted Hotels in Clipston

This 12th-century former monastery has a long history full of deaths and hauntings. Abbot Geoffrey is said to have been murdered here in 1345 and his ghost, that of a hooded monk, has frequently been sighted wandering around the premises. If you hear footsteps on the cobblestone path near the stables, that is the ghost of Matilda, a gypsy girl who became pregnant by the former master of the house, who refused to take responsibility for his actions. The baby was born dead and Matilda's fury was so immense that she placed a curse on the house and her spirit still wanders around it, unable to find peace.

Talbot Hotel has an oak staircase that was part of Fotheringay Castle until the 1600s. Mary Queen of Scots was tried and beheaded in that castle. Mary was supposed to have walked down that staircase to her execution, and left a mark on the staircase's wood from her ring. Guests report that her spirit walks down that staircase and her portrait is moving from the wall.
