It was founded in 1598 in the town of Fuentes de León, named for being of the Encomienda Mayor of the Priory of León of the Military Order of Santiago with a number of more than five hundred residents, beginning the works in mid-1593 with the contribution of donations and alms from all the residents of the town, being inaugurated in 1603.

These friars remained here until 1822, the year in which this convent was suppressed by military orders. The closure of the convent produced a strong upheaval in Fuentes, since the presence of the friars was of vital importance in religious, social and cultural life, they assisted the sick, fed the poor, preached and acted as counselors ... Fame of the miracles of the Saint attracted many faithful, his fame even reached Seville, which turned Fuentes into a small place of pilgrimage, forcing the town to change its infrastructure with the increase of inns, inns, increased sales of products of the land… Therefore, its closure produced an isolation that negatively affected the economic, social and cultural development of the town.

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1777
What is the history of the property?
In the 18th century there were various causes for the abandonment of children. Economic needs, illegitimate children, food shortages and the impossibility of caring for the children made the work of the hospices and children's homes essential.

With the construction of the Hospicio y Hospital Real de Huérfanos, Expósitos y Desamparados de Oviedo, the Regent Isidoro Gil de Jaz began a policy of reforms in Asturias aimed at curing the ills of an ailing society. Its construction took up most of the second half of the 18th century, and it functioned until 1965, when it was closed by the Provincial Council.

In the following years, the building suffered a prolonged period of abandonment during which various uses were proposed, including that of a large cultural centre. This period culminated with the installation of the Hotel de la Reconquista in 1973, after having undergone extensive renovations that began in 1958.
In his Hospice and Royal Hospital project, the architect Pedro Antonio Menéndez proposed a design based on a large central courtyard at the back of which a chapel would be located. Menéndez laid out two square courtyards on either side of the chapel, and a Baroque façade presided over by a large coat of arms of Spain.

The architect Manuel Reguera also took part in the development of the works and was in charge of supervising them. The building was continued in 1768 with the construction of the chapel designed by Ventura Rodríguez.

Currently managed by the Eurostars Hotel Company chain under the name Eurostars Hotel de La Reconquista 5*, the former Hospice is a historical monument declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1973. Inside it has several works of art, such as three murals by Joaquín Vaquero Palacios, paintings by Mariano Moré, Adolfo Bartolomé and José Purón Sotres; as well as a banner of Carlos III and a sculpture of San Roque Peregrino.

In addition to its artistic value, it has a close relationship with the Royal Family, and since 1980 it has been the venue for the Princess of Asturias Award jury meetings and decisions.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Asturian Hospice is one of the most important buildings in the region, not only for its architectural value, but also for its extension of almost 15,000 square metres. Its various interior courtyards are reminiscent of the layout of other similar buildings, such as the former royal hospitals of Santiago de Compostela and Granada.

Its layout also resembles the hospital model that emerged in the middle of the century with the Hospital de Afuera in Toledo, the work of Alonso de Covarrubias, and the Hospital de Santiago in Úbeda, designed by Andrés de Vandelvira, both of which have their churches behind a large courtyard. Pedro Antonio Menéndez took as his model the traditional layout of Spanish hospitals, although with structural and decorative elements of local use, which became more evident in the façade.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Located in the heart of Oviedo, next to the Parque San Francisco and just a few minutes from the Campoamor Theatre, the Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista 5* is found at the point where the historic quarter and the financial district meet.
Has restoration work taken place?
After the end of the spanish Civil War, life was resumed in the Royal Hospice, which had been damaged by the siege and war siege of Oviedo. In 1942, the Provincial Council of Oviedo decided to restore the building.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The bust of Isabel II, by Francisco Elías Vallejo, made of cast iron in the Trubia arms factory in 1846, is preserved from the old Hospice. It is located in a corridor of the Patio de la Reina, next to some curious rustic benches with carved and polychrome pieces on the back that come from Portugal and were used as halters to harness the oxen. In the same area, as guardians of the Chapel, there are two lamps with Baroque stipe columns from an 18th-century altarpiece. Corbels and baroque chests from different periods complete the furnishings.

In the Gil de Jaz Room, a Solomonic column belonging to an 18th century altarpiece and the work of Francisco Camilo, from the Baroque school of Madrid, from the Monastery of San Juan Bautista in Corias, known as the "Asturian Escorial", stand out.
One of the two "Grand Father" clocks made by James Condolif in Liverpool in the 19th century is located in the lobby of the hotel's interior bar. The other is located on the first floor of the bedrooms.

The hotel also has a large collection of engravings with Asturian themes in the corridors of the bedrooms and inside them. Among them is the work entitled Sibila de cumas - in suite 103 - a magnificent copy of a work by Doménico Zampieri from the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. The original is in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Special mention should be made of the Adoration of the Shepherds -in the Royal Suite-, a fine 17th-century copy made by engraving a work by Rubens, painted in 1621, which is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen (France). This Adoration is a companion piece to the Adoration of the Kings, located in the Council Chamber of the Royal Suite, also a copy by Rubens. In the antechamber of this Suite is a portrait of King Philip IV, an anonymous Velázquez copy from the mid-17th century.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The Hotel de La Reconquista has hosted the most distinguished personalities from all international fields, as well as being the venue for the most important cultural, political and social events of the Principality of Asturias. Some of them are Nelson Mandela, Gabriel García Márquez and Pelé.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
Created in 1980, the Princess of Asturias Foundation is a non-profit institution that contributes to the promotion of scientific, cultural and humanistic values, and to consolidate the link between the Principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Spanish Crown.

The driving force behind its foundation was the journalist Graciano García. On 24 September 1980, the constitutional charter was signed in the Covadonga Hall of the Hotel de la Reconquista, in a ceremony presided over by the then Prince of Asturias, in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain.

H.M. King Felipe VI was Honorary President of the Foundation until his proclamation as King of Spain on 19 June 2014. Since then, HRH Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, Princess of Asturias, has held the Honorary Presidency of this institution, which holds the annual Princess of Asturias Awards.

Eurostars Gran Hotel La Toja

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1908
What is the history of the property?
Around 1830, a priest from O Grove (Pontevedra), who was familiar with the legends about the medicinal waters, went to the island of La Toja with a very ill servant. After several bathing sessions in the thermal pools, the servant's health improved significantly. This marked the beginning of a progressive increase in the number of visits to the island.

In 1840, a private company established itself on the island with only a few barracks and a few ashlar houses. In 1841, the Galician chemist Antonio Casares analysed the composition of the water. His findings led to the official authorisation of the spa in 1842, thus encouraging a group of neighbours and owners to start up a small bathhouse.

At the end of the 1880s the figure of the Marquis of Riestra appeared, owner of the 110 hectares occupied by the island, who soon realised the possibilities of the business model.

In 1896 Laureano Salgado, an important Galician industrialist, and Fernando Rodríguez Porrero, an Asturian pharmacist, bought the land and formed the Sociedad Anónima La Toja. All of them intended to transform the small island of La Toja into a meeting place for the social and political elite, as well as a tourist and industrial business.

A competition was organised for the design of the Gran Hotel La Toja, in which French and German architects competed, but also Daniel Vázquez-Gulías from Ourense, who was the winner. His proposal was inspired by other famous European spas, such as the French Vichy and the German Marienbad. The jury was composed of members of the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and the Escuela Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid.

On 27 January 1904, Daniel Vázquez-Gulías signed a complete urban planning project around the thermal baths. The general plan envisaged the occupation of two thirds of the island's land, including the construction of a Grand Hotel with a spa, casino, restaurant, hospital, chapel, a farm and extensive landscaped areas. The remaining third was reserved for a hunting reserve and a small beach. It was also planned to build small colonies of luxurious chalets, a jetty and a bridge linking the island with the peninsula of O Grove.

The overall project was presented on 4 February 1904 in Madrid to the Civil Governor of Pontevedra and the Minister of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce and Public Works. This was how the work was authorised to begin with a period of 4 years to carry it out.

At the beginning of 1905, construction work began, placing the building at the forefront of Europe. In 1907 the work on the Gran Hotel and the Casino pavilion was completed, and it was inaugurated on 1 July 1908.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The architecture of the Gran Hotel La Toja responds in a practical way to all your needs. It is a building halfway between a hospital and a hotel, with characteristics of both. It is a curative building that gives rise to a space carefully designed to satisfy the wishes of its users.

The eclecticism typical of the end of the century allows all the stylistic liberties that converge in La Toja and which are manifested to a greater extent in the interior decoration, where stonemasons, blacksmiths, ceramists and painters contributed with their work to create the marvellous atmosphere of the Gran Hotel.

The dining room is a monumental double-height space with adjoining reading and billiard rooms. Once the tables were removed, it became a dance and music room. Its greatest architectural interest lay in the way natural light reached the centre of the room, through hollow levels and a large skylight. The interior embodied a modernist atmosphere adorned with arches with festoons and plant motifs, beautiful parapets of fine ironwork in the upper galleries and a magnificent mural painting by Ramón Pulido symbolising health, love and beauty, in a clear allusion to the paradise of the island of La Toja.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The Chapel of the Shells is a monument built with the small treasures of the sea that declares the link between nature, architecture and the seafaring culture of the area.
The hermitage of La Toja has been worshipped since the 12th century.
Has restoration work taken place?
At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the existing buildings were completed and improved, at the same time as the appearance of totally modern facilities designed in the style of the most prestigious spa towns.

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, the Gran Hotel underwent its first major refurbishment, designed by Francisco Javier Sanz. The aim was to increase the number of rooms and the dining room, as the hotel was attracting more and more tourists.

The building lost the towers that had made it unique and the original frescoes and sculptures. The pomp disappeared in favour of simple, severe lines.

Today the hotel has 199 rooms, 21 of which are suites. The aesthetic reforms carried out by Eurostars Hotels have updated the facilities, restoring original elements of the building to enhance their value. As for the spa, its essence has been maintained and its equipment has been enhanced.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The building used to have towers, frescoes and original sculptures. There were columns-bust of women with their hands up, as if supporting the building.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
Many celebrities have stayed at the Gran Hotel La Toja. Among them, numerous European monarchs such as the Infanta Isabel II and the King and Queen of Spain. Also Nobel Prize winners such as Gabriel García Márquez, José Ortega y Gasset, Severo Ochoa and Ramón y Cajal.

Among the writers who have stayed at the Gran Hotel are Miguel de Unamuno, Julián Marías, Camilo José Cela and Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, among others. The Baroness Thyssen and the banker Ana Patricia Botín have also been invited.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
In 1989, for the first and only time in history, an annual meeting of the Bildelberg Club was held in Spain, and its organisers chose La Toja as the venue. Its members, who included the kings of Spain and Belgium, the American tycoon David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger and the former Spanish president Felipe González, thought that this was the most suitable place to enjoy absolute discretion.

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1917
What is the history of the property?
The history of the Hotel Real is told in a similar way to that of the city of Santander. During its hundred years of life, the hotel has battled storms and hurricanes; it has survived the great fire of Santander and a civil war. It has also been part of the happiest moments of the city and its inhabitants, hosting great festivities and important monarchic, political and cultural receptions.

King Alfonso XIII received the preliminary project for the construction of the hotel on 4 September 1915 from the architect Javier González de Riancho, who proposed that the building be located on the site the monarch had in mind, between Avenida de la Reina Victoria and Paseo de Pérez Galdós.

An initial project is proposed for a luxurious hotel of solid and elegant construction. It would consist of six floors, four of which would be used as bedrooms, with a group of rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The hotel would be surrounded by a park and from its terraces there would be a view of the sea and its coastline. On 18 September, the final approval of the site was obtained and Javier González de Riancho's project was accepted. The tender was awarded to a Basque contractor who undertook to have the works completed by 31 March 1917.

On 26 February 1916, the Sociedad Anónima del Hotel Real was created and constituted, which would be responsible for the purchase of the land, the construction, management and operation of the hotel.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Hotel Real was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It still conserves its original structure. It has seven floors, including the basement and the main floor. The main floor consists of a succession of large galleries, terraces and lounges decorated with elements inspired by the English Georgian, Adams and French Louis XVI styles. All of them are representative of neoclassicism, although, in the architect's words, "treated with the sparseness characteristic of grand hotels".

This neoclassical style can be perceived throughout the hotel, with decorative details designed by the architect himself, such as the classic furniture in fine wood, which is in excellent condition.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The Eurostars Hotel Real 5*G.L., which faces the Playa de los Peligros beach, towers over the bay of Santander from atop the hill on which it stands, surrounded by its own gardens and resting in the heart of Santander's most peaceful and emblematic area, between the historic city centre and the Sardinero beach.
Has restoration work taken place?
The Eurostars Hotel Real 5*G.L. underwent several refurbishments throughout its history. The most notable was between 1987 and 1988, with a transformation that enabled it to be open all year round. During this period, all the floors were remodelled and the reception was enlarged. The east terrace was also enclosed to make a lounge-dining room and the roof of the hotel was renovated.

Since 1995, the hotel's original furniture has been restored every two years. In 1997, the lounges of the suites and the Royal Suite were redecorated, as well as the Royal Hall and the main floor.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The dome of the Eurostars Hotel Real 5*G.L. is destined for one of the best rooms in the building, the master suite. With its circular shape and great height, it is one of the best spaces in the hotel, with an almost panoramic view of Santander and its bay.

Another highlight is the upper terrace, which occupies an area of 1,700 square metres.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The Hotel Real has hosted the Royal Family and a huge list of illustrious guests. These include writers Rafael Alberti and Jorge Luis Borges, singers Plácido Domingo and Montserrat Caballé and cyclist Miguel Indurain.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
In 1922 the Hotel Real became the seat of the Argentine embassy with President Marcelo Alvear.

In 1929 the airline pilots Lewis and Williams landed in Santander after flying over the Atlantic Ocean from Maine (USA). One of them stayed at the Hotel Real.

During the Spanish Civil War, the Hotel Real became a General Hospital for the wounded.

On 15 February 1941, the historic Santander fire broke out, affecting the city centre in particular. The Hotel Real was spared from the flames, but suffered damage.
