The castle was built in Neo-Renaissance style and inspired by the castles of Loire in France. In the following years, surrounding lands were claimed to expand the hotel. Arthur von Schnitzler acquired the castle and the surrounding land for a total of 1150 hectares in 1897. In 1913, the castle was expanded to the Northeast. When Arthur von Schnitzler died in 1917, the castle was passed on to his wife and three daughters.

With a history dating as far back as the 10th century, Schlosshotel Schkopau is an exquisite castle hotel. The castle was rebuilt in the 15th century in a Renaissance style, maintaining only its keep and its outer defensive wall. After WWII, the castle was used as a refugee shelter and it was later abandoned, until its current owners began restoring it to its former glory in 1996, to open as a luxurious hotel in 2001. Its idyllic location in the German countryside, as well as its historic and period decoration with lush furnishings and fireplaces make it ideal for a trip back in times long past.

The history of Schloßhotel Althörnitz goes as far back as the mid 17th century, when the castle started being constructed by a famous architect for the mayor, Dr. Christian von Hartig. The smaller tower of the castle was added in 1853, while the atrium was added in 1892. The castle was also famous because on its premises the research for what would become the renowned European porcelain took place in the 18th century. The castle was turned into the luxurious hotel that it is today in 1996, providing a place of relaxation and period atmosphere to every guest.
