The monastery was built in the 12th century by the mother of Portugal's first King, to honour Saint Marinha, the patron saint of women about to give birth, since she went through some difficult pregnancies. Various changes were made to the monastery's architecture and structure through the centuries, resulting in the building having Gothic, Classical, as well as Romanesque elements.
