Location
The Down Hall Hotel is a true gem, boasting a beautiful historical building set in extensive and stunningly manicured grounds - over 100 acres, in fact! From the moment you arrive, you'll be struck by the impressive architecture of the manor and its lovely surroundings. If you appreciate a nice walk, this location is perfect for you with lovely strolls around the hall and stunning gardens with wonderful walks. Perhaps even a little play area in the woods for the little ones? Whether you want to stroll around the grounds or go further afield to explore, the hotel is ideally located just a short drive away from London and convenient for Stansted airport. Although it's better to have your own car, don't worry, there are many nice walks for you to enjoy around the hotel. The view from our room was simply breathtaking; the front with sun blazing through the window completed the overall picturesque scene. While some guests suggest eating elsewhere, the location is ideal and the facilities, including a bar and restaurant, are great. The only downside was that some guests found the staff needed more training. If you're attending a wedding, the location is especially good. So overall, this hotel is highly recommended for an unforgettable stay in a beautiful location.

Breakfast
Down Hall Hotel's breakfast received mixed reviews from guests. Some found the selection of food to be good and the quality of the food to be excellent with gluten-free options available. However, others were disappointed with poorly cooked hot food, institutional scrambled eggs and supermarket hash browns. Some guests were also frustrated with the poor breakfast service, including long waits for eggs and tea and no preserves or marmalade. Despite the mixed reviews, some guests enjoyed the breakfast, especially the fresh fruit, yoghurts and pastries. It seems that the breakfast service at Down Hall Hotel could benefit from improvement to meet the standards of a luxury hotel.

Dinner
The dinner experience at Down Hall Hotel received mixed reviews from guests. Some found it to be superb and exceptional while others found it to be overpriced, limited and inconsistent in quality. The Al a Carte menu was seen as limited, while some guests found the decorations in the restaurant pleasing. Bar meals and fish and chips for lunch were some of the few saving graces for those who didn't enjoy the dinner. Unfortunately, some guests had negative dining experiences with cold, bland and inedible food or poor service. Breakfast was also inconsistent in quality. While some enjoyed the lovely food and surroundings, others found it a letdown. Overall, guests suggested simple ingredients cooked well at a fair price as a possible solution.

Rooms
Down Hall Hotel offers a mix of large and small rooms, some spacious and some basic and some beautifully decorated while others are outdated or require maintenance. Overall, guests enjoyed clean and comfortable rooms with many mentioning the elegant, traditional style of the hotel's stunning period property. Some were even upgraded and enjoyed spacious rooms, lovely views or an accessible room. However, some guests complained of uncomfortable beds, broken facilities, insufficient amenities or overpriced rooms. The lack of air conditioning was an issue for some and some guests found rooms too hot or too poorly ventilated. Despite some minor issues, guests generally appreciated the high standard of the rooms and the beautiful interiors with one reviewer describing their room as "stunning."

Beds
If you're looking for a good night's sleep at the Down Hall Hotel, the reviews suggest that it largely depends on your luck with the bed. Some guests found the beds to be very comfortable with large king size options available. However, several guests complained that their double beds were made by pushing two single beds together, which made for a very uncomfortable night's sleep. This was only made worse by less-than-stellar pillows. In some cases, there was simply too much furniture cluttered around the bed, making it difficult to move around. Overall, while some guests may experience some sleeping woes, the bar and lounge areas are reportedly quite comfortable for relaxing.

Cleanliness
The Down Hall Hotel is highly praised for its cleanliness by guests. Many guests compliment the immaculate and spotlessly clean rooms, as well as the stunning and beautiful cleanliness of the hotel overall. The towels are noted to be wonderfully white and fluffy and the bathrooms are spottless clean with everything you need. However, there are a few guests who mentioned that some areas could have been cleaner, such as plates not cleaned away and dog hairs on the sofa outside. Despite this, the hotel still maintains a general atmosphere of cleanliness and promptness and some guests even note it as the cleanest building they've been to since lockdown.

Staff
Guests of the Down Hall Hotel have repeatedly praised the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Many have given shout-outs to individual staff members who went above and beyond to provide exceptional service. However, there have been some complaints about staff shortages leading to slow service, particularly in the dining areas. While some guests have had negative experiences with unhelpful or slow staff, the majority of reviews praise the staff as professional, warm and accommodating. Despite some issues with service, the overall impression is that the Down Hall Hotel staff are friendly and professional, making for a lovely stay.

Spa
The spa at Down Hall Hotel was praised by guests for its great treatments, good facilities and relaxing atmosphere. However, some guests were disappointed with the size of the spa or the fact that it was fully booked, which prevented them from using it. Others were charged extra to use the spa or had to book slots in advance. Some also noted that the spa did not include a pool, but did offer saunas and steam rooms. Overall, guests enjoyed their spa experiences but wished the booking process was more streamlined and that access was included for hotel guests. The staff were also commended with some guests singling out Charlotte for providing excellent facials.
