In the 1900s, the city of Ashville was known for being the best place in the US to treat tuberculosis due to the climate of the area. The three-story hotel was therefore built to house the families of the patients being treated nearby. Built by registered nurse Anne O’Connell (dubbed the "princess" due to her flowing red hair and charismatic nature) and financed by Doctor Karl von Ruck, the hotel opened its doors in 1924 and was named “Princess Anne” after nurse O'Connell's nickname.

Edwin Wiley Grove, a then-famous investor and now dubbed as the "Father of Modern Asheville", bought 408 acres of land in Asheville to build residential neighbourhoods. After two years, Grove started planning the hotel with Seely. Hand built by 400 men hauling granite boulders from the Sunset Mountain, the hotel opened for business less than a year later. Jennings Bryan, the Secretary of State, delivered an address for the grand-opening. The hotel is a proud member of the "Historic Hotels of America".
