The castle and its surrounding land date back to the 18th century. The property changed hands many times before been purchased by George Murray in the early 19th century, who renamed the castle as Mansfield. The turbulent history and change of owners did not cease then, though, since the castle was sold time and again, until the Fowler family came to its possession and refurbished it extensively at the beginning of the 20th century. During WWII, the castle was used by the military and after the war it was turned into a hotel, while still changing various owners throughout the years.
Set in the heart of Dornoch, the castle boasts a 500-year-old history. Although the exact date of its construction is not known, it is said to be around since the 16th century. The castle was rebuilt during the 18th century, and it was used as a prison, a school and many other things before becoming the lavish historic hotel that it is today. Maintaining as much of its original atmosphere and period grandeur, the castle is bound to offer an unforgettable experience to every guest who stays there.
