Summarized by AI

Chequers Inn Hotel is an appealing destination for those seeking a blend of historic charm and convenient location. Nestled in the tranquil area of Forest Row, the 600-year-old building offers a peaceful retreat while remaining centrally situated, providing guests easy access to the town's attractions and nearby cafes and eateries. Its proximity to venues for family gatherings and weddings, as well as its short drive from the airport, further highlights its accessibility. Despite the absence of breakfast services and an unavailable kitchen for other meals, guests can find solace in the highly recommended Java & Jazz café located just a short walk away. While the hotel lacks on-site dining options currently, the café ensures guests have a pleasant alternative for their morning meals. Inside, the rooms reflect the rustic charm of an old Coaching Inn with spacious interiors and beautiful antique wooden furnishings. Although the decor can feel dated, the comfortable and clean beds are consistently praised, providing a good night's rest. However, some rooms suffer from cleanliness issues and broken fixtures, pointing to a need for modernization and better maintenance. Reviews of the staff are generally positive, highlighting the hospitality and friendliness of the employees, particularly the owner and reception staff who make efforts to enhance the guest experience. Nonetheless, the hotel struggles with staffing shortages, sometimes leading to operational inconveniences such as difficulties with check-in or unstaffed areas. Overall, while Chequers Inn Hotel might require some refurbishment and an upgrade in amenities, its historic charm, the friendly staff and the overall comfort it provides make it a distinctive and memorable place to stay.

Review Summaries

Location

Nestled in a charming, tranquil area, Chequers Inn Hotel boasts a prime location that guests consistently praise. This historic 600-year-old building is centrally situated in Forest Row, making it an excellent base for exploring the town's attractions and amenities. Its proximity to popular venues and events, such as family gatherings or weddings, is particularly appreciated. Guests highlight the convenience of having a variety of eateries and cafes nearby, notably the delightful Java & Jazz café next door for a satisfying breakfast. Despite being along a main road, the property manages to maintain a serene atmosphere, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of activities. The hotel’s location is favored both for its ease of access and the quaint, old-world charm of the surrounding area. It is also noted to be a short drive from the airport, adding to its accessibility. Overall, the Chequers Inn Hotel's location is ideal for visitors seeking both convenience and character in their stay.

Breakfast

Visitors to Chequers Inn Hotel should be aware that breakfast services are currently unavailable. Numerous guests noted the absence of breakfast despite it being advertised or included in their reservations. Additionally, the hotel has experienced ongoing difficulties securing a chef, which has further impacted food service offerings. However, there is a silver lining: a highly recommended café located just a short walk from the hotel provides a delightful alternative for breakfast options. For those looking to enjoy a meal in the morning, this nearby establishment is a convenient and well-regarded substitute. Overall, while breakfast at the hotel itself leaves much to be desired, the proximity of the café helps ensure that guests won't start their day hungry.

Dinner

Guests have consistently expressed disappointment with the lack of dining options at Chequers Inn Hotel. Despite advertisements suggesting food service, reviewers noted that no meals were available during their stay. The kitchen was closed, leaving guests without dining options on-site. The bar was also reported to close early due to the absence of customers. As a result, some guests had to resort to ordering takeout for dinner. A recurring mention was the absence of a chef, which contributed to the unavailability of food. Additionally, the dining room was reportedly locked as early as 9:00 am, further limiting any potential meal service.

Rooms

Chequers Inn Hotel presents a charming exterior with an antiquated feel, reminiscent of a romantic old Coaching Inn. Inside, the rooms, while spacious and often furnished with beautiful old wood pieces, generally reflect a dated, retro 70s style. Cleanliness is a mixed bag with some rooms described as clean and tidy, while others have been found dusty or even dirty. The comfort of the beds receives consistent praise, providing a good night's rest. The spaciousness of the rooms is another positive aspect, allowing guests ample space to feel comfortable. However, modern amenities tend to fall short with multiple mentions of broken fixtures such as showers and toilets. The lack of en suite facilities in some areas and poorly lit, dark corridors detract from the overall experience. While the decor and fixtures appear to be from a bygone era, they often require modernization to meet today's expectations. Service levels vary with some guests experiencing room upgrades at no extra charge, though others encountered issues like missing basic supplies such as tea, coffee and towels. A recurring theme is the inconsistency in room conditions, ranging from horrendous, smoke-scented environments to wonderfully quaint spaces. Despite its quirks and the need for updates, the inn’s historical charm and the clean, comfortable beds can offer a unique stay for those seeking a nostalgic experience.

Beds

The beds at Chequers Inn Hotel generally receive favorable feedback from guests. Most reviews highlight the comfort and spaciousness with many describing the beds as very comfortable, extremely comfortable or reasonably comfortable. Guests appreciate the size and cleanliness with mentions of crispy clean sheets and large beds, including options with two doubles. However, there are occasional concerns; some guests found the beds too hard, encountered lumpy pillows or experienced issues like squeakiness. A few reviews mention unconventional setups, such as two mattresses stacked with a thin sheet. Despite these isolated issues, the consensus leans towards a positive sleeping experience.

Cleanliness

The Chequers Inn Hotel received a range of feedback concerning its cleanliness that leaves much to be desired. Positive aspects include clean bedding and shared bathrooms, as well as notably good showers in some rooms. However, guests frequently noted significant issues such as stained and dirty carpets, filthy shared bathrooms and dirty cups and tissue remnants under beds. Many rooms were described as dusty with some reporting crumbs on the bed and floor. Bathroom conditions were a frequent complaint with moldy tiles, unemptied bins and hair in sinks. The cleanliness in restrooms did not meet basic standards with some mentioning urine in the toilets upon arrival. The environment within the hotel was also a concern with reports of dark corridors, poor lighting and a pervasive stale smell. The overall state of the hotel suggested it was run down with sightings of dirty laundry piles and a strong cigarette odor in some areas. Key amenities such as towel availability were inconsistent and certain areas appeared neglected with rubbish from previous guests still present. The hotel seems to be struggling with a significant staff shortage, which impacts both cleanliness and the availability of food services. A comprehensive refurbishment may be necessary to address these widespread issues and improve guest satisfaction.

Staff

The Chequers Inn Hotel has earned praise for its friendly and welcoming staff with many guests highlighting the kind hospitality they received. Numerous reviews commend the pleasant demeanor of the hotel's employees, including the owner, who often steps in to extend a warm welcome. The reception staff, especially noted for their efficiency and cheerfulness, contribute greatly to the positive guest experience. However, several reviews also point out staffing issues, mentioning that the hotel sometimes operates with minimal personnel. This has led to instances where guests found no staff available in key areas like the reception, restaurant or bar. Some guests experienced difficulties with check-in due to the lack of immediate staff presence and noted that services like the restaurant were occasionally unavailable due to these shortages. Despite these operational challenges, the commendable efforts of the existing staff to be helpful, friendly and accommodating stand out. The owner’s personal involvement and the staff’s kind actions, such as calling paramedics during an emergency, reflect their commitment to guest care.

Historic

Chequers Inn Hotel stands out as an attractive and historic destination, deeply rooted in its past. The building itself dates back to the 1400s and exudes authenticity and rustic charm. Guests frequently note its old-world features, which contribute to its unique character. Its status as a 500-year-old inn is particularly appealing to those who appreciate history. Set in a charming town, this heritage hotel offers an inviting glimpse into bygone eras with its well-preserved structure. Although it may benefit from some tender loving care, it remains a lovely destination that values its rich, historic legacy.
