The value of this “black gold” was so great that tin was considered a form of currency until as late as 1932. Intrigued by and in tribute to his ancestry, Wichit Na-Ranong, owner and Managing Director of The Slate, used tin mining as a unique and personal source of inspiration in the creation of the resort.

Oriental Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Japan. It first opened its doors in 1870 to meet the steady demand of foreign travellers on the newly opened Kobe Port. Its fame was known amongst politicians and business magnates. In 1995, the original hotel was destroyed by an earthquake and a new one was built while keeping the same design and service philosophy.

This European-style hotel first opened in 1915 right after the grand opening of the Tokyo Station. During the 1923 Kanto earthquake, it served as a safe refuge for the citizens. It was then heavily damaged during World War II and did not resume business until 1951. In 2003, the hotel was claimed as Important Cultural Property of Japan and received a huge renovation in 2006.

It started as an elite enclave for German expatriates in Singapore around 1900s. It was then bought, renamed to Godwood Hall and reopened as a café-restaurant in 1922. As the business flourished, it was turned to a luxurious hotel in 1929. Noted guests included the Duke of Windsor, then the Prince of Wales of England. As the Second World War raged on, it was converted to a residence for high-ranking Japanese officers. After the war, it was used as a British War Crimes Court. Only during the 1960s did it regain its previous status of a luxurious hotel.
