Questionnaire
Year erected: 1649
What is the history of the property?
People say that the place existed prior to the Turkish possession in 1571 who took over Cyprus from the Venetians. The proof is some Venetian coins that were found near the church as is written in bibliography of the Paphos metropolis museum that those coins were part of the property of the church.

In 1649 the church was built in memory of St. Cosmas and his brother St. Damianos. History says that they were doctors and were travelling in Middle East, Greece and Cyprus healing people. Here at Ayii Anargyri they were using the Sulfur waters to heal people.

The written records prove that the place was operating as “Rehabilitation” from the 17th century. The 4 rooms of the North site of the church were built in 1760 and that date is written in stone on top of the door of one room. During the 18th century the place was rented out to different people and customers were coming from all over Cyprus and Egypt to get the benefits of sulfur waters from St. Anastasia’s spring which was coming down through the river next to the buildings. During winter they used to boil the water in big tanks and they were sharing the only 2 type of Ancient Bath tabs.

In 1807 it is written that there were 12 rooms in total, fully equipped with kitchen utilities.

The year 1809 some property including a watermill was sold to take the bishop of Paphos out of prison.

Turks destroyed the church in 1821.

During 1860-1870 part of the building (probably the church) was used as school with teacher the priest who was serving the church. School was operating until 1894 and some time proper teacher was running the school and his salary was the food that the kids used to bring him from home every Saturday.

Between 1870-1892 a new renter came in to run the “rehabilitation “and he painted the icon’s display of the church in light blue. It was so bad that when Dr Hogarth visited the place in 1888 mentioned it in his book DEVIA CYPRIA.

The healing ability of the Sulfur waters was quickly expanded in Cyprus and abroad. From Analysis of the water in Cypriot and Egyptian laboratories, was proved that the values and benefits of it were very important and helpful for skin diseases, rheumatism, arthritis and a lot more. It is important to mention that although in Cyprus was some years of drought, the spring of St. Anastasia never stop giving the beneficial waters.

Same water is used now in most of the resort rooms (Original and Bungalows) as well as in the 3 treatment Pools (Phlebology, Rheumatology, Kinisiotherapy) and 8 Spa rooms.

The most valuable things that are well kept until now are: The icon of CHRIST from the 18th century. The stone inscriptions on the 4 rooms opposite the church. Advert from old advertisement on news paper of 1918. Old bill (check out) of a customer of the 16th of September 1935 who stayed 14 nights and paid GBP 3.16.

In 1983 a farmer from the village near, Zenon Chrysanthou, acquired the old place which was ruined. He was delighted as he had always loved the area and appreciated its almost magical tranquillity and would dream about transforming the area into a place where once again people would benefit by visiting. With basic renovations of the existing 12 rooms and the restaurant (which is now the Old Bar) he runs it with his wife for few years. Together with his three children decides to improve it by building a well equipped Spa which will use latest technology equipment’s for the use of the Sulfur water and 3 pools with again Sulfur water and special mechanisms. Sadly, his untimely death in 2003 meant he never did see his dream come true but he had certainly inspired his family who were determined to see his plans through to their fruition.

After many years of planning, the concept of the Natural Healing Spa took shape. Through the Structural Funds of EU, the traditional building and the church, were restored carefully and sensitively to recapture their original character and the same style is mirrored in the new Spa and bungalows that were added. The complex is now a Healing Spa Resort operating since June 2009.

What is the history of the property?
The Palazzo Murat is an elegant hotel created from the restoration of an eighteenth century palace in the style of Neapolitan baroque Vanvitelli’s school, exalting the old structures and objects of that period that enrich the interior. The precious decor, the period furniture and the magnificent location makes this Palace a unique place in the world.
It owes its name to the expropriation order by former King of Naples (1808-1815) who made it his residence for his secret encounters away from the eyes of his wife Carolina Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.
It is difficult to find tracks from the fall of French domination to the rise of the Bourbons. Towards the end of the century, the property fell into neglect, and was divided into different lots belonging to various families of the town..

At the beginning of the twentieth century after World War I Positano also experienced the epic of migration: they lived on fishing and agriculture, the standard of living was very low, the area did not offer great opportunities, arable land were few and inaccessible. For this reason it was created in the habit of many families, consisting of at least 10 children, that the eldest of the children would stay and help with the work, whilst the younger children were forced to emigrate. The most popular destination was the United States, at the time in strong growth, offering work and dreams. Positanesi at the beginning were grateful for the most menial jobs, and then grow to create their own business, but they never forgot their origins, born in fact, "Little Positano", the 35th Street, in NY, and for years these Positanesi of America have supported Positano economically even being so far away.

The history of Positano had a profound change during the Second World War: with the allied army halted for months by the Germans at Cassino, Positano became the "Resting House" for the Anglo-American officers, General Clark seizes the Hotel Miramare making it his headquarters. All officers who have stayed in Positano, become the promoters of the Amalfi Coast in the world, so to start the tourist vocation of Positano.
Meanwhile, migrants are beginning to invest in their country of origin thanks to the boom in American economic, and also for the Palazzo Murat it was the same fate. The ancestors of the present owners, the Family Attanasio, starting with Alfonso Cinque, the father of the mythical Donna Carmela, is among the first to believe in the tourism of Positano, and invests all his savings to purchase the property, his son "Carlino" the founder of the "San Pietro Hotel" significantly contributed to the making of Positano one of the most appreciated places in the world.

JOACHIM MURAT'S LIFE
Joachim signed on with the army in 1787. He was smart and courageous. He came to Napoleon's attention in 1795 when they put down a rebellion of anti-royalists in Paris.
He later fought with Napoleon in Italy and Egypt. Joachim was also actively involved in the coup d'etat that put Napoleon into power. Napoleon thought he'd better keep the loyal ones close, and so he married Joachim to his sister Caroline. That was in the year 1800.
Joachim went on fighting in important battles, such as the Battle of Marengo. Napoleon was very pleased with the boy and made him grand duke of Berg and Cleves and also sent him to Spain as lieutenant. Having arrived in Spain, ambitious Joachim thought it was a pity that the Spanish throne was vacant and tried to sit on it. But the find something else he could dream about. Later Napoleon put his brother Joseph, who was previously king of Naples, on the Spanish throne. Knowing about Joachim's fondness of sitting on thrones, Napoleon made Joachim king of Naples. That was in the year 1808 and Joachim loved it. Napoleon called him Joachim-Napoléon, which would be Gioacchino-Napoleone in Italian, but the Italians kept calling him Gioacchino Murat. As king of Naples Joachim did a decent job. Among other things, he set up the Napoleonic Code and strengthened the economy. He continued his life as a solider but that worked only for a time. On the retreat from Moscow he simply abandoned his troops and hastened home because he felt his kingdom of Naples was in danger. Joachim then got caught up in the middle of European politics. Napoleon's enemies courted Joachim Murat as a potential ally. In effect, Joachim didn't know whose side he should be on. And that got him killed. The Austrians sacked Naples and Joachim fled to Corsica. He tried to come back to Naples but got arrested and shot.

The Oval, Dunster
Vacation Home in Dunster,
United KingdomEurope > United Kingdom > England > Somerset
From $205
From $205
Historic Vacation Home Questionnaire
Year erected: 1366
What is the history of the property?
The Oval is one of the earliest houses built in Dunster. The house was originally a hall house, one large room with a fire central to it. Everyone who lived in the house shared one or two rooms, including the animals if the weather was especially harsh.

The fireplace is likely to have been on the street side, rather than where it is now, like the orange and black ‘cobb’ cottage you see further down the street. At this time - around 1320-40s - the other houses in the street would have been The Stag pub (which also had a wooden screen until a hundred or so years ago) and Spears Cross, the B and B further up West Street going towards the castle. The rest of this part of West Street probably had temporary houses of wattle and daub filling in the gaps. Some of the other smaller cottages between here and Spears Cross would have been built after the Black Death of 1348.

The wood panelling in the hallway is extremely old – you can see marks throughout where the carpenters have worked it by hand. It’s likely the screen in the hallway was added around 1450 -1500 to enclose the hall house, giving a mezzanine level where the main bedroom is now. It is unusual for this to remain as they were mostly pulled down in the Victorian era as walls were added.

The cruck beams in the main bedroom are of historical importance for this area of West Somerset. They are made from one large piece of wood and, unusually, they retain their original wooden pegs and holes. The craftsmanship and size of the beams suggest the person who built The Oval would have been wealthy. The beams came from the local area and are of historical significance, hence the Grade II listing.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The basic structure of the house is cob, which is a wooden frame filled with rubble, stones and held together with lime plaster. This is the 1366 building - slap bang in the middle of the medieval period.

During the Tudor period, the wooden screen was added and probably the fireplace was moved to the wall (rather than the middle of the downstairs) and a staircase was added.

In 1810 there was a fire that devastated the cottage, and changes were made as a result.

In the Victorian era we think the twin bedroom was added. And at some point in the 1960 or 70s, an extension was added at the back to create a larger kitchen and the dining room.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Dunster is the largest remaining intact medieval village in England. Almost all the properties on West Street, Church Street and the High Street are listed to protect their unique architecture. But there are also Georgian an Victorian buildings dotted around the main street and in the back streets too.
Has restoration work taken place?
The present owner has made very few changes, all in line with the permitted development based on the Grade II listing. She has added secondary double glazing and added a sun deck at the top of the garden on the hill.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The wooden screen in the main hallway, the cruck beam in the main bedroom, the wooden window and door frame to the utility room, the wooden door frames in the 'Snug' room and at the top of the stairs.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
Grade II listed. Channel 4's Time Team has dendrodated the property to 1366. The photos are from that visit.

Historical England are in the process of the same dating.
Is there anything that you would like to highlight, add or clarify?
The ceilings in the lower half of the property are low as you would expect. It is a deceptively large house, and the historical features sit happily side by side with the modern day comforts.
