Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1522
What is the history of the property?
THE BLACK BOY or BUOY Inn Caernarfon

The question that requires an answer to is when was the name Black Boy first used?

Although records called The Ale House reconnaissance go as far back as 1764, only the names of the victuallers appeared with that of 'their guarantors up to the years preceding 1820. It was only in that year that the names of their licensed premises also appeared, and, in this case, we find that there were two adjacent taverns on this site. The Black Boy was No.7 in the street and the four Shillings and Six Pence was No.9, a Mr. Thomas Parry being the licensee of the former, and a Mr. Thomas Williams licensee of the latter.

Going further back to the turn of the century we find on a map dated circa 1800 that the official name of the street at that time was The Black Boy Street and the same is true of a Census of 1794. The latter was not a proper Census as those which family historians are accustomed. It was more of a head count giving only the name of the head of the family and recording where appropriate (and wife), then the number of children and of servants and finally a total of the number of people in the house. We find that 48 people in all lived in Black Boy Street in 1794. Further research in the Archives at Caernarfon showed that a dwelling house was sold by Mr. Thomas Wynne the squire of Glynllifon to a Mr Henry Robyn’s in 1717 and on the deed, it states that the name of the street was Street Y Black Boy.

Now if we could go back another 60 years, we would be in the middle of the period of the Protectorate under Oliver Cromwell and this is where a well known journalist and author, who died last year, Mr. Ivor Wynne Jones, claimed to have seen documents that were found when the renovations which included extension were made to this building some 50 years ago by the then landlord Mr. Norman Underhill. He maintained that it was here that the supporters of the monarchy met regularly and drank a loyal toast "To the Black Boy". They were referring to the heir to the throne who later became Charles II, but dare not mention his name lest they were overheard by some of Cromwell's spies. Black Boy was in fact a pet name given to the heir to the throne by his mother Henrietta Maria, French by birth but with some Spanish blood in her veins.

When Charles was born he is said to have had a swarthy complexion and his mother used to refer to him as "My Beautiful Black Boy! Now it is understood that there are Black Boy's in other towns and that this explanation is regarded as being the true version for the origin of the name. It is not; therefore, absolutely certain when the name Black Boy was first used in Caernarfon, but Ivor Wynne Jones' contribution to the debate cannot be faulted.

The next question that needs to be addressed is how it was that the "Black Boy Street" or "Street Y Black Boy" became to be called "Northgate Street" in English and "Stryd Pedwar a Chwech" in Welsh. To commence with, let us take the English name "Northgate Street". Along the centuries since the completion of the town walls in 1290 it should be noted that there was no such entrance in the town wall, and it was circa 1820s that the opening was created at the bottom of the street to allow access to the walled town. The entrance at the bottom of Church Street was the first to be created shortly after renovations were carried out to the 8t. Mary Church in Church Street 1810 - 1814. This it is believed occurred c. 1817, and was followed by the other two streets running parallel viz. Market Street and Northgate Street. In 1610, John Spede's Map shows that Palace Street was the official name of the street from Castle Ditch right down to where the town wall was breached and from then on that entrance was called "North Gate". Previously there existed only "The East Gate" 'Y Porth Mawr' and "The West Gate" 'Porth yr Aur'.

The answer as to why the Welsh name "Stryd Pedwar a Chwech" was adopted is quite apparent. As was first stated the present Black Boy is made up of two taverns No.7 and No.9 in the street and in 1820 when the new entrance became known as "Northgate" the name of the tavern at No.9 was "The Four and Six Pence" which translates as "Pedwar a Chwech". Hence the English version of the street name became "Northgate Street" and the Welsh version after a tavern in the street "Stryd Pedwar a Chwech".
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
1509-1547. Henry VIII was born at Greenwich on 28 June 1491, the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He became heir to the throne on the death of his elder brother, Prince Arthur, in 1502 and succeeded in 1509.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?

What is the history of the property?
The Cape Heritage hotel is an integral part of the restored Heritage Square, which dates back to the 18th Century. Our central courtyard is shaded by South Africa’s oldest known fruit-bearing grapevine, a calm oasis from which to explore the Mother City.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Cape Heritage Hotel is an integral part of the restored Heritage Square, which is bordered by Buitengracht, Hout, Bree and Shortmarket streets. The earliest Dutch and Georgian houses were built in 1771. The Cape Heritage Hotel itself was built in the 1780′s.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Archival research shows that most of the original buildings were used for commercial reasons. Tobacconists, snuff makers, gunsmiths, bakers, coach makers and wheelwrights prospered here. There was a rope warehouse, several retail outfits, a boarding house, a chapel and an undertaker.
Has restoration work taken place?
The vine – and Heritage Square itself – might not be in existence if the city council had had its way. In the 1960′s, Heritage Square was earmarked for demolition.
In its place, there were plans to establish a multi-storey car park. Luckily, finances to complete this project were never forthcoming. Instead, at the end of the 1980s, consent was granted to renovate the square, starting the largest private conservation project the city has ever known. For more information on the restoration of the square, visit the Cape Town Heritage Trust’s website.

Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
Many historic features are still clearly visible in the hotel. Exposed original wall finishes and murals are complemented by dëcor that reflects Cape Towns diverse historical and cultural heritage.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
J.B. Munnik, the first person in South Africa, and the 4th in the world to be born by caesarean operation.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
In the early days of Cape Town’s existence, the roads and streets around Heritage Square were some of the most important thoroughfares of the early colony. Buitengracht Street, for instance, which marked the western border of the property, ran along the canal marking the outermost limits of the original Dutch settlement, established in 1652. Shortmarket Street, on the Southern side, leads directly to Greenmarket Square, the original market place for fresh farm produce.
Riebeeck Square, named after the pioneering father of permanent European settlement, was first known as Boere Plein after the free Burghers, who brought their ox wagons here to sell their farming produce. Later still, it was known as Hottentots’ Plein after the noisy, Khoi farmhands who manned the farmers’ wagons.
In general terms, the houses of Heritage Square were built in typical 18th Century Cape Town architectural style, the earliest of which was documented in 1771. Archival research shows that these were not entirely residential building and all the owners engaged in some form of enterprise, ranging from blacksmith to retail and tobacco manufacturers. Businesses included tobacco and snuff makers, gunsmiths, a bakery, a wheelwright, a warehouse, coach makers, several retail outfits, boarding houses, a chapel and even briefly, an undertaker.
At 108 Shortmarket Street, the building was designed with the usual conspicuous front entrance (the building’s public face) –Whilst the rear of structure was accessed through a narrow alleyway, which led to the rear courtyard, out rooms and kitchen. This hidden dimension of the building would have been used by servants, slaves or people residing in the backrooms.
J.B. Munnik, the first person in South Africa, and the 4th in the world to be born by caesarean operation, owned 108 Shortmarket Street. This unique operation was performed by an even more unusual historical figure, Dr. James Barry (who is reputed to have been a women, disguised as a man, in order to practice medicine); and James Barry Munnik was named after him/her.
By the end of the 19th Century the insurance plans indicated that the cluster buildings which today make up Heritage Square were already a mixed commercial area with manufacturing enterprises, with boarding houses and hire houses in the same block. The owners, and the times, may have changed, but Heritage Square is possibly closer to its historic roots now than any other time this century.

The VineLike many houses of the day, it was centred around an intimate courtyard. A grapevine, planted in this courtyard in 1781, still flourishes today, bearing fruit and shading guests who shelter here for their daily repast. Thanks to vigorous pruning each year, the oldest known fruit-bearing grapevine in South Africa survives without ever being fed or watered!

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1777
What is the history of the property?
In the 18th century there were various causes for the abandonment of children. Economic needs, illegitimate children, food shortages and the impossibility of caring for the children made the work of the hospices and children's homes essential.

With the construction of the Hospicio y Hospital Real de Huérfanos, Expósitos y Desamparados de Oviedo, the Regent Isidoro Gil de Jaz began a policy of reforms in Asturias aimed at curing the ills of an ailing society. Its construction took up most of the second half of the 18th century, and it functioned until 1965, when it was closed by the Provincial Council.

In the following years, the building suffered a prolonged period of abandonment during which various uses were proposed, including that of a large cultural centre. This period culminated with the installation of the Hotel de la Reconquista in 1973, after having undergone extensive renovations that began in 1958.
In his Hospice and Royal Hospital project, the architect Pedro Antonio Menéndez proposed a design based on a large central courtyard at the back of which a chapel would be located. Menéndez laid out two square courtyards on either side of the chapel, and a Baroque façade presided over by a large coat of arms of Spain.

The architect Manuel Reguera also took part in the development of the works and was in charge of supervising them. The building was continued in 1768 with the construction of the chapel designed by Ventura Rodríguez.

Currently managed by the Eurostars Hotel Company chain under the name Eurostars Hotel de La Reconquista 5*, the former Hospice is a historical monument declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1973. Inside it has several works of art, such as three murals by Joaquín Vaquero Palacios, paintings by Mariano Moré, Adolfo Bartolomé and José Purón Sotres; as well as a banner of Carlos III and a sculpture of San Roque Peregrino.

In addition to its artistic value, it has a close relationship with the Royal Family, and since 1980 it has been the venue for the Princess of Asturias Award jury meetings and decisions.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Asturian Hospice is one of the most important buildings in the region, not only for its architectural value, but also for its extension of almost 15,000 square metres. Its various interior courtyards are reminiscent of the layout of other similar buildings, such as the former royal hospitals of Santiago de Compostela and Granada.

Its layout also resembles the hospital model that emerged in the middle of the century with the Hospital de Afuera in Toledo, the work of Alonso de Covarrubias, and the Hospital de Santiago in Úbeda, designed by Andrés de Vandelvira, both of which have their churches behind a large courtyard. Pedro Antonio Menéndez took as his model the traditional layout of Spanish hospitals, although with structural and decorative elements of local use, which became more evident in the façade.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Located in the heart of Oviedo, next to the Parque San Francisco and just a few minutes from the Campoamor Theatre, the Eurostars Hotel de la Reconquista 5* is found at the point where the historic quarter and the financial district meet.
Has restoration work taken place?
After the end of the spanish Civil War, life was resumed in the Royal Hospice, which had been damaged by the siege and war siege of Oviedo. In 1942, the Provincial Council of Oviedo decided to restore the building.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
The bust of Isabel II, by Francisco Elías Vallejo, made of cast iron in the Trubia arms factory in 1846, is preserved from the old Hospice. It is located in a corridor of the Patio de la Reina, next to some curious rustic benches with carved and polychrome pieces on the back that come from Portugal and were used as halters to harness the oxen. In the same area, as guardians of the Chapel, there are two lamps with Baroque stipe columns from an 18th-century altarpiece. Corbels and baroque chests from different periods complete the furnishings.

In the Gil de Jaz Room, a Solomonic column belonging to an 18th century altarpiece and the work of Francisco Camilo, from the Baroque school of Madrid, from the Monastery of San Juan Bautista in Corias, known as the "Asturian Escorial", stand out.
One of the two "Grand Father" clocks made by James Condolif in Liverpool in the 19th century is located in the lobby of the hotel's interior bar. The other is located on the first floor of the bedrooms.

The hotel also has a large collection of engravings with Asturian themes in the corridors of the bedrooms and inside them. Among them is the work entitled Sibila de cumas - in suite 103 - a magnificent copy of a work by Doménico Zampieri from the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. The original is in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Special mention should be made of the Adoration of the Shepherds -in the Royal Suite-, a fine 17th-century copy made by engraving a work by Rubens, painted in 1621, which is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen (France). This Adoration is a companion piece to the Adoration of the Kings, located in the Council Chamber of the Royal Suite, also a copy by Rubens. In the antechamber of this Suite is a portrait of King Philip IV, an anonymous Velázquez copy from the mid-17th century.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The Hotel de La Reconquista has hosted the most distinguished personalities from all international fields, as well as being the venue for the most important cultural, political and social events of the Principality of Asturias. Some of them are Nelson Mandela, Gabriel García Márquez and Pelé.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
Created in 1980, the Princess of Asturias Foundation is a non-profit institution that contributes to the promotion of scientific, cultural and humanistic values, and to consolidate the link between the Principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Spanish Crown.

The driving force behind its foundation was the journalist Graciano García. On 24 September 1980, the constitutional charter was signed in the Covadonga Hall of the Hotel de la Reconquista, in a ceremony presided over by the then Prince of Asturias, in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain.

H.M. King Felipe VI was Honorary President of the Foundation until his proclamation as King of Spain on 19 June 2014. Since then, HRH Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, Princess of Asturias, has held the Honorary Presidency of this institution, which holds the annual Princess of Asturias Awards.

What is the history of the property?
Masseria Bandino (or BANNINO as reported by ancient maps) was, probably, a grange of the ancient monastery of San Nicola de Casulis as it is testified, still today, by the rural complex of the crypt of San Nicola and by the road connecting the masseria and the monastery.

The history of Bandino is linked to the type of rural habitat of Otranto where, due to the conditions of the territory, exposed to Turkish incursions, the farm and the fortified farm constituted the only productive unit possible.

Its location made it particularly suitable for grazing. The area is, in fact, crossed by a mill run and the farm has four wells that ensure a constant and continuous supply of water. The animals, grazing in the garrigue, produced a delicate milk flavored by local Mediterranean essences. The whole water retention system is still visible, while all the characteristic drinking troughs, the drip trays and the collection ducts have been completely stolen. It has being built on the rocks, it had got a court closed by the main body of the building (vaulted ceilings) and by buildings covered with tiles.

The farm was bought by the De Donno family in the first half of the last century together with the farmhouses "Torre Pinta" and "Le Pezze" located at Badisco.

The ancient farm areas have the characteristic vaulted ceilings. At the center of the ceilings You can find the silos that ensured the constant supply of hay and fodder for animals. The whole place appears as a superposition of buildings of different ages ranging between '600 and' 800.

From the Masseria, You can easily arrive to the ruins of the abbey of San Nicola de Casulis through the medieval dirt road that passes the small pine forest.

Historic Hotel Questionnaire
Year erected: 1780
What is the history of the property?
The block where the property is located is already shown on the first maps known of the Cartagena de Indias. It's located on the most relevant quarter, where the Spanish colonization began, close to important buildings like the Casa de los Oficiales Reales (house of royal officers), the Cathedral of Cartagena, and the Cabildo or Governor´s house, which is the seat of the regional administration of the Bolivar Department today.

What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
Since colonial times, the building was a "casa alta" (high house) that predominates in this quarter. It is known that most of the buildings were of this type, because of their importance and use. Located near the port, the first floor was usually used as a warehouse or shop and the second was intended for rooms.

This house was probably built in the late seventeenth century and keeps the typical characteristics of this epoch. The spacious high-ceilinged entryway leads to a small lobby and staircase, and there is a small balcony on the upper level. The front rooms on the ground floor keep the original arches and interiors used in the past as warehouse or depot.

Continuing into the courtyard in the center of the house, you can find the cistern or tank used to keep rainwater to drink during the dry season. Today it is transformed into our cloistered dining room "El Aljibe". In the backyard, there is an open kitchen and servant's rooms with a spiral staircase that climbs to the "mirador" on the top of the roof.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
Its location in the historic old city of Cartagena (World Heritage Site) has been very relevant through the years because of the proximity to the old port, the Inquisition Palace, the Plaza Mayor, and Plaza del Mar squares, known today as Plaza Bolivar and Plaza de la Aduana respectively.
Has restoration work taken place?
Yes, 2007 the house was restored and adapted for the boutique hotel that is Alfiz.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
Some archaeological findings are exposed to our guests in our Library and many pieces of furniture are original in the rooms.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The first record

In the late eighteenth century, the house was owned by a French citizen and merchant named Jean D'Anglade, married to Rosa Guerra. There are numerous references in the archives that show the richness of this family. They owned several houses in the city in addition to the hacienda San José de Cospique. Apparently engaged in buying and selling properties, we found his name on various documents that show a feverish commercial activity, but also slave trade and smuggling.

The Consul's house

In January 1824, the British Consul Mr. Edward Watts reached Cartagena with the purpose of promoting trade relations between UK and this port, after the weakness of the Spanish administration.

He settled down in two houses on Cochera del Gobernador street turning to Candilejo street.

The Consul supported the independence process led by Bolivar, who visited him during his last stay in the city, offering a miniaturist portrait painted by the Italian artist Meucci as a gift. This portrait was used in 1831 as an ornament during the funeral that the city made in honor of Bolivar´s memory.

Consul Watts was an outstanding member of the city's aristocracy. There are numerous references made by English chroniclers and officers in their travel diaries of the years 1820 to 1830 in which they emphasize the friendly and hospitable attitude of Mr. Watts. He was forced to leave the city in 1833 as he was accused of intervening in the internal affairs of Colombia.

During recent years we have received the visit of Watts family descendants.

Important to mention also that the widow and brother of writer Garcia Marquez has also visited the library of our hotel .
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
Probably the Liberator Simon Bolivar visited Consul Watts in his residence on his last journey before leaving the country for exile, but he died weeks later in Santa Marta.
Has the property received any certifications for its historical status?
A heritage building in the old city of Cartagena and part of Historic Hotels of the World.

Historic Resort Questionnaire
Year erected: 1653
What is the history of the property?
The first building on Estate Shoys, where The Buccaneer is located, was constructed by Charles Martel, a Knight of Malta, all the way back in 1653. In 1733, when the Danes bought the island of St. Croix, their Governor von Prock built his home on the estate. He erected the Sugar Mill that still stands on site. The next owner was Michael Shoy, for whom the estate is named, and he began growing cotton there. After that came the Heyliger Company and its cattle ranch. The Armstrong family bought that ranch in 1922 and in 1947 opened The Buccaneer as a hotel with 11 rooms. It was the first hotel on the island to be built and operated by an island family. Now, nearly 75 years later, the resort is the oldest family-owned resort in the entire Caribbean. Elizabeth Armstrong is the third generation of her family to own and run the property.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The property has grown and expanded over the years, and the architecture of each element reflects the era in which it was built. The most famous historic figure with ties to the area is Alexander Hamilton.
Has restoration work taken place?
Yes, over the years, restoration has taken place simply to keep buildings in good working order. For example, the Sugar Mill needs some periodic rehab. However, there has not be significant restoration.
