Ruthin Castle is a truly romantic hotel, positioned within acres of woods and parkland, about 20 miles from Chester, in an area of stunning natural beauty.

Former Castle Country House
A medieval castle fortification in Wales, close to the town of Ruthin; it was constructed during the 13th century by Dafydd, on a red sandstone ridge looking over the valley. The castle has changed many hands throughout the centuries and has survived numerous sieges and invasions to the Welsh land. In 1923, the castle was used as an international private clinic devoted to the treatments of obscure diseases, but it closed in 1950. During the 1960s, the castle was sold again and this time it was opened as a hotel and started taking the shape it has today.

The stunningly beautiful grounds of the castle lead to a public park that offers pleasant strolls. The hotel is positioned less than a 5-minute walk from the lovely small town of Ruthin that is a perfect place for history enthusiasts and shoppers alike. Guests raved about the beautiful surroundings and scenery that provided ample opportunities for walking and exploring the countryside. The castle with its impressive exterior and beautiful historic building, is set in a gorgeous location that seems to be out of the way of everything and offers ample parking spaces. From the great central location, guests can access the town or go on great walks without having to drive. The staff was attentive and friendly, adding more positivity to the lovely location and grounds.

Breakfast
Guests have mixed feelings about the breakfast at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa. While some rave about the wide selection of foods available, others are not so impressed. The basic help yourself English breakfast of boxed cereal, yogurt and white or brown toast has left some disappointed, especially given the hefty price of £17. Some guests have found the food choice to be very limited and overpriced with the breakfast often cold or of low quality. Some guests have also found the breakfast service to be poor with tables not being cleared and staff being rude. However, there are guests who have found the breakfast to be excellent with plenty of delicious food to choose from. Overall, guests are divided on the quality of breakfast at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa and it may be worth checking reviews before making a booking.

Dinner
If you are planning a stay at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa, you may want to consider your dining options carefully. While some guests raved about the amazing food, others found the menu to be limited with poor quality and disappointing choices. Some even had to wait for their meals for up to 50 minutes with chaotic service and not enough staff. It's worth noting that there were also extra charges for some dishes and basic extras like vegetables or potatoes. The breakfast and buffet options didn't fare much better with some describing them as the worst they had ever had. Despite these negative reviews, there were some guests who enjoyed their dining experience with well-cooked and well-presented meals that were both delicious and well-priced. Overall, the dining experience was a mixed bag with some guests feeling let down by the limited menu and high prices, while others appreciated the great-quality cuisine and excellent service. It may be worth checking out the Dragon Tafarn for good food and be sure to update yourself on the latest changes to the menu.

Rooms
Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa may have an impressive property, but it's clear from the guest reviews that the rooms are in need of some serious attention. Many guests reported shabby and worn-out rooms with damaged furniture, rotten windows and peeling paint. Some rooms were comfortable and clean, but many lacked basic amenities like a mini-bar or housekeeping service. Guests also reported limited hot drink selections and toiletries. The decor was often described as tired, dated and in need of renovation. Some rooms were spacious and had lovely bathrooms, but others had small, musty bathrooms with poor sink drainage and black mould. Additionally, many guests mentioned dirty public spaces, cobwebs and even spiders in their rooms. While some guests enjoyed their stay and praised the hotel's impressive property, others were let down by the underwhelming rooms that didn't live up to the photos advertised online.

Beds
The bed is one of the most important aspects of your stay in a hotel. It can be a make-or-break factor in your experience. At Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa, there are mixed reviews about the beds. Some guests found the two single beds pushed together to be uncomfortable with no mattress cover or topper. In one instance, a guest had to endure a noisy fan all night and an unsatisfactory dinner.

On a positive note, many guests found the beds to be clean, comfortable and large. Some even found them to be extremely comfortable, such as the ones with huge beds. The bedding and bed were complimented for their softness and cleanliness. However, there were some complaints about poor quality pillows, not enough variety in the pillow choices and some rooms being too sparse.

Overall, there were opinions on both ends of the spectrum with some guests stating that their stay was comfortable and others finding it to be quite the opposite. One missed opportunity was the lack of preserves to go with toast. Additionally, a deluxe room only had a standard-sized bed. Despite some flaws, Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa still has something to offer, just make sure to check the beds before booking a room.

Cleanliness
The Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is a beautiful historic castle set in picturesque grounds. However, a significant number of guests have highlighted hygiene and cleanliness issues in their reviews. While some guests found the rooms to be very clean and tidy, others complained about mould, dirt and cobwebs in their rooms and bathrooms. Some guests even found baby slugs in their rooms. The hotel needs significant investment to improve the quality, functionality and cleanliness of the rooms and many areas of the building require attention. While the reception area and corridors were lovely and clean, some passageways and public spaces were dirty and lacked basic cleaning. Cobwebs and spiders were a common sight and thick layers of dust were found on shelving and bedside tables. The decor needs attention, as paintwork is in poor condition and there is water damage on ceilings and walls due to a leaking roof. Guests also complained about poor sink drainage, lack of toiletries and filthy windows. Despite these issues, some guests found that the hotel owner was continually renovating the property bit by bit. The hotel has been given a low rating for food hygiene and some guests found the food to be atrocious. One guest even had parsnip and carrot in grave served with Sea Bass! Overall, the Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa could benefit from a good deep clean and significant investment to retain its historic charm and meet modern-day guests' expectations.

Staff
The staff at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa are well known for their friendliness and helpfulness. Reviews rave about the fantastic staff with many guests singling out individual members for their brilliance, like Emma who leads a brilliant team. The kindness, warmth and hospitality of the staff is highly valued and many guests comment on the great service they received. Some guests had issues but found the staff's friendliness made up for it. It's clear that the staff are working really hard to offer great service, often going above and beyond what is required. While there were some negative comments about the staff, most reviewers echo the sentiment that the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Spa
The Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa boasts a lovely spa that is definitely worth a visit during your stay. Some guests found the hot tubs and treatments to be absolutely fabulous! However, there were some mixed reviews regarding the facilities. A woodland spa afternoon turned out to be a bit of a letdown with a malfunctioning steam room and a less-than-great hot tub. Some found the spa treatments to be on the pricey side, but they were said to be totally amazing. The spa is lovely with jacuzzi's, but you need to book in advance. The young lady, Hanna, who's in charge of the spa is extremely welcoming and helpful. However, some guests found the spa costs to be too high and the treatments were sometimes cancelled or rearranged. Some found that the previous spa manager's departure caused quite a bit of confusion. If you're an early-riser, you can benefit from the sauna during the limited 8am-10am window. That said, some guests found the temp of the hot tubs to be too low and found themselves being rushed out a little early. If you're lucky enough to get a booking, the twilight woodland experience is an absolute must-try. Overall, the spa services at Ruthin Castle met with mixed reviews but still has plenty to offer.

4 Star
The Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is a historic property that boasts a blend of period features and modern touches in keeping with its traditional style. However, a few aspects leave something to be desired. Some guests experienced issues with pricing and limited menu options, leading to disappointment with the overall value for money. On the positive side, the suite accommodations are excellent and the property itself is interesting and enjoyable to explore. While the hotel is a pleasant place to stay, it falls short of being a top-rated four-star hotel due to some areas of neglect and less than satisfactory service.

Historic
The Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is a beautiful, historic castle that boasts a rich and fascinating history. It is a unique facility that offers a resort experience with bags of character, steeped in history. The setting itself is lovely with beautiful grounds and a medieval castle that will transport you back in time. The whole experience of staying in a castle is made even more special by the warm welcome from the staff. The historical importance of the hotel is evident in the beautifully decorated public areas, which allow the history of the castle to shine through. Set in a gorgeous location, the Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is full of charm and trading on its past glories. With a connection to Bertie, Prince of Wales, who became Edward VII, the castle is a stunning reminder of a bygone era. If you're looking for somewhere with history, charm and a truly magical atmosphere, then the Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa is the perfect place to stay.

Dog Friendly
Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa offers a pet-friendly experience for guests, although some were surprised to find out it was a dog hotel. The hotel charges a fee of £15 for dogs and while some guests appreciated the added bonus of being able to walk their dogs through the hotel, others found that the rooms smelled and were tatty and run down. The hotel also offers peacock sightings and dog foul bins. There were some concerns expressed about the location of dining facilities with some being asked to eat at the bottom of the stairs with everyone walking by. However, overall, guests with pets were satisfied with their stay and would consider returning.
