In 1961, a new modern tower wing was built thanks to the increasing number of guest. In 1973, during the negotiations to end the Yom Kippur War, the US Secretary of State stayed in the hotel. The property was built by Thomas Cook in 1899 to accommodate European travelers in Aswan. Notable guests included Winston Churchill, Tsar Nicholas II, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana and Agatha Christie who used the setting for her novel Death on the Nile.
