Historic Hotel
Summary of reviews related to the 'Historic' categoryIf you're looking for a place to stay in Cannon Beach with a rich history, look no further than the Cannon Beach Hotel Collection! The beautiful decor in old New England style will transport you back in time. In fact, the hotel is over 100 years old and has always been a lovely old inn. It's amazing to think about the little hotel's history and what it must have seen over the years. Despite its age, the hotel has strived to keep the historic look and facilities, which is lovely to see. The charming historic rooms are unique and very comfortable and guests love the cottage accommodations. Overall, staying at this 'historic, New England style B&B' is a quaint and comfortable experience.

However, it's important to note that if you book a courtyard room, it's not part of the main property. Some guests have had trouble with parking and unloading their things, only to have to load back up and drive to a different property. Additionally, some of the rooms are quite dated and could use a remodel. However, even with these minor inconveniences, the Cannon Beach Hotel Collection is a wonderful place to stay and soak in the rich history of the area.

Historic Bed & Breakfast Questionnaire
Year erected: 1892
What is the history of the property?
In 1868, William Kehoe, an Irish immigrant, married Anne Flood and the two quickly started a family. Their first address, located on Columbia Square, was 130 Habersham Street. As his business and family grew, Kehoe built a larger, more stately home. He liked the Historic District so much that he purchased the southern half of the lot, located diagonally across the street, for $950. The Kehoe House was designed by DeWitt Bruyn, and was built at the cost of $25,000. The home was completed in May of 1892, whereupon Mr. and Mrs. Kehoe and their 10 children moved into their new home. Mr. Kehoe's heirs sold the house in 1930. In the 30 years following the sale, the property was used as a boarding house, funeral parlor, and held for a time by Alabama and New York Jets football star, Joe Namath. In 1990, Mr. Namath sold the property, and after a two-year renovation, the property opened as a historic bed and breakfast inn aptly named The William Kehoe House. The property was sold again in 2003, and purchased by its current owner, HLC Hotels, in May of 2007.
What was the era and/or the architectural style in which the property was built?
The Kehoe House was designed by DeWitt Bruyn in a Queen Anne Revival style, and was built at the cost of $25,000. Mr. Kehoe, having owned the most successful iron foundry in Savannah at the time, incorporated a lot of cast iron detailing into the home including verandas, window treatments, fencing, and ceiling medallions.
Is the property surrounded by other historic buildings?
The Kehoe House stands almost centered in the Historic District of Savannah which was founded and established by James Oglethorpe in 1733. It sits on Columbia Square next to the Davenport House which wouldv'e been torn down in the early 1900's by the new owners of the Kehoe House, the Goettes whom wanted to turn it into a parking lot for their funeral parlor. This sparked a movement between a group of individuals which lead to the Historic Savannah Foundation being formed.
Has restoration work taken place?
Having changed hands quite a few times over the years, there have been some modifications made to the house. When it was remodeled into an inn, each guest room was given a private bathroom and temperature controls. Most of the fire places are no longer usable except for the three located on the main floor. We do also have an elevator to help guests.
Are there any elements of particular historical importance at the building?
All covered verandas show the signature taint blue paint on the ceilings to ward off evil. The two fireplaces in the double parlor also feature medallions depicting and angel carrying two children up to heaven which were put in by Mr. Kehoe when the house was built.
Are there any important guests or previous owners worth mentioning?
The house was held for a time by Alabama and New York Jets football star, Joe Namath. In 1990, Mr. Namath sold the property.
Are there any significant events that took place at the property in the past?
During its time as a funeral parlor it hosted many viewings including the service of Florence Martus who is more often known as the waving girl of Savannah.
Is there anything that you would like to highlight, add or clarify?
As a historic home in a very historic city, we are featured on numerous tours including architectural, walking, trolley, horse carriage, pedicab, and ghost tours. We are haunted, but don't let that scare you away, everyone is very friendly.

Historic Guest House Questionnaire
Year erected: 1875
What is the history of the property?
The lighthouse on the grounds of HI Point Montara Lighthouse hostel may be small, but it’s the only American lighthouse known to have beckoned seafarers on both coasts of the country.
Replacing the original lighthouse at Mayo’s Beach in Wellfleet, MA in 1881, the lighthouse was taken down in 1925 and, everyone believed, destroyed for scrap metal. It wasn’t until the following century that researchers discovered the disappeared Cape Cod lighthouse had actually been moved to the West Coast. The lighthouse was installed at Point Montara in 1928, yet no one knows exactly how – or why – it made its cross-country journey. One rumour has it voyaging all the way around Cape Horn to arrive at its final destination at Montara, CA.
Point Montara had been established in 1875 as a fog signal station, doing its best to warn approaching ships of its craggy coastline with the addition of a red kerosene lantern in 1900. Eventually the lantern was upgraded to a fourth order Fresnel lens in 1912 with a stick work tower and lantern house.
The Point Montara hostel’s other buildings have their own rich histories, starting long before the arrival of the cast-iron lighthouse. The United States government established a fog signal at Point Montara in 1875 in response to two high-profile crashes along the coast in the decade before. Initially, the site housed nothing but a 12-inch steam whistle, whose five-second blast could be heard from 15 miles away, and a two-story, Victorian-style innkeeper’s dwelling that still stands on the hostel grounds and serves as housing for hostel staff.
In 1902, a large barn-style fog signal building was added; a secondary building used for a workshop and storage went up around the same time. Today, the same fog signal building and annex houses the hostel’s private rooms, and a large common area used for movie screenings and other hostel group gatherings. The annex building has been modernized and outfitted with private rooms and guest bathrooms. A third building, where today you’ll find the hostel’s kitchens, lounge, and most of its guest rooms*, went up in 1961 to house members of the U.S. Coast Guard.
1942-1945 Point Montara became an Anti-aircraft training Center. This was a top secret facility operated by the U S Navy during WWII it contained 48 structures, housed 1,500 men, trained 320,000 Navel Sailors and Merchant Marines on the latest technology in Anti-aircraft Systems and was progressive in the use of WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) and radio-controlled drones for live-fire training.

The 1961 building was barely used for a decade when the entire station was automated and the buildings were abandoned.

This amazing property began welcoming travelers in 1980 after HI-USA (then AYH), the U.S. Coast Guard, the California Coastal Commission, the California Coastal Conservancy and California State Parks worked together to open a hostel here. The location was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and is in a Marine Protected Area. Today, operated by HI-USA it’s the perfect escape for history buffs and lighthouse enthusiasts, as well as anyone else who loves the seaside and the great outdoors.
